One of the primary activities at CU Cleantech is our Student Placement Program, where we match qualified students with internship, full time, and project-based work opportunities with companies and organizations in the cleantech space. This is a win-win for the students and companies: the students get great hands on experience to complement their academic programs and the companies get access to the amazing talent pool at the University of Colorado. These students are not only a great resource as interns, but are great candidates for post-graduation recruitment.

Student Placement Types

Internships: These make up a majority of the listings, and are targeted towards current students. Internship time commitments range from a few hours a week during the academic year to full 40 hour+ work weeks during the summer. Many of the internships are paid, though there are some unpaid internships as well. Organizations offering internship opportunities range from small startups to large multinational corporations to non-profits.

Full Time Jobs: For organizations looking to find recent (or soon to be) graduates of the University of Colorado, look no further! CU Cleantech has an extensive network of qualified students, and students don’t stay students for long!

Project Based Work: Not all companies have the resources or bandwidth to bring on interns for an extended period of time, but certainly could use some student talent for particular projects. Same goes for students, many students would love the opportunity for some real-world experience but can’t make a long-term commitment due to the rigors of the academic program. The project-based work placements fill this need by providing “mini” internship opportunities to help companies out with specific, short-term needs. The length of the projects range from just a few days to over a month. Some projects will serve as credit, while others will pay a stipend.

Volunteer: There are many great organizations working with CU Cleantech that bring on students on a volunteer basis. What these positions lack in monetary compensation they make up for with great experiences, connections and opportunities for personal growth.

Technology Transfer Office | Internship

Job Description

The Boulder TTO needs qualified interns with an interest in emerging technologies in the physical sciences, intellectual property, and marketing to develop patent and commercialization plans for new technologies. Preference is given for candidates who have an engineering or chemistry degree, or who have taken university-level coursework in engineering or chemistry.
The successful candidate will research patent issues, conduct commercial feasibility analyses for new discoveries and, in certain cases, develop a go-to-market plan or licensing strategy for the discoveries.
The intern’s work product includes written analyses of patentability and of the most appropriate commercial path for a given invention, or a summary of any determination that an invention is not viable.
The mission of the CU Technology Transfer Office is to aggressively pursue, protect, package, and license to business the intellectual property generated from the research enterprise and to serve faculty, staff, and students seeking to create such intellectual property.
Interns will report directly to a TTO Licensing Manager.
Summer workload is 30-40 hours a week. Fall and Spring workload is a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Overview of the Office:
The TTO is staffed by 19 professionals. The office provides strategic direction and IP management support to research investigators on the CU campuses. Technology transfer licensing associates work with inventors and with companies interested in licensing CU’s inventions.
• Candidates should be enrolled in an academic program at CU Boulder. Candidates with Science and Technology undergraduate degrees are preferred, however candidates with an enthusiasm for the physical sciences will also be considered.
• Candidates should be highly motivated “self starters” and possess solid analytical abilities, organizational skills, and written and verbal communication skills.

Planet Ecosystems | Internship

This role requires an organized, focused and highly skilled Web Developer with a strong background in object oriented PHP, MySQL, software engineering, design patterns, and agile methodology. Rocky Mountain Institute | Consultant

Rocky Mountain Institute is seeking a candidate for a consultant role with interest and significant experience in the electrical sector. Our electricity practice, Next Generation Electricity (“NGE”), is focused on catalyzing a vast reduction in the use of fossil fuels while at the same time increasing the security and robustness of the system. The immediate need for this position would be to work in NGE’s Solar Market Transformation Program. This program centers on efficient and low cost of capital finance, economic viability (with a focus on soft balance of system costs), customer acquisition, and electrical system integration of distributed photovoltaic (“PV”) capacity.

RMI has a long and successful history of collaboration with a wide range of electricity system players including recent, well-publicized efforts with PG&E, Duke Energy, and the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Our electrical system work in NGE is currently centered around the Electricity Innovation Lab (e-Lab), a state-of-the-art forum for collaborative innovation to test our ability to accelerate the transformation of the U.S. electricity system to a more efficient, renewable, and affordable future. In addition to solar activities, it is likely this position will support broader e-Lab activities.

While there will be an immediate emphasis on developing and helping drive client projects and research for RMI’s electricity practice, there will also be opportunities to collaborate with our active programs in buildings and whole system design, industrial efficiency and transportation related concepts.

The Market Research Associate will provide background research and data analysis support for

given subject. Assignments can be anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks in duration, and there’s
always something new.
Key competencies for the position include:

• Familiarity with data analysis
• Interest in emerging technology and energy markets
Orientation for the position includes an introduction to the office environment, other staff
